In the rapidly advancing world of cosmetic aesthetics, consumers are often overwhelmed by the sheer variation of treatments available. Two of the most commonly confused treatments available are Botox and Dermal fillers, as they are both minimally invasive injectable procedures that target similar areas and require very little downtime.
So what is the difference between Botox and Fillers?.
This is a question that we’re asked a lot here at Lipstick Empire, Edmonton! Let’s start with Botox. Botulinum toxin is a natural protein that relaxes the facial muscles temporarily, resulting in the disappearance of fine lines and wrinkles. When injected by one of our expert practitioners, Botox can make a huge improvement to the moderate-severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar area) and the crows feet lines at the side of the eyes. At your Botox consult, a good practitioner will listen to your concerns (i.e, a specific line here or there) but will also look at your face as a whole and assess how to best achieve your desired result as naturally as possible. These results can be expected to last for a period of 3-6 months.
Botox is one of the safest products in both the cosmetic and medical field as it has undergone decades of testing and extensive use by medical professionals. Not only is Botox a cure for aging, it can also treat excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) and can even be used to treat headaches and migraines! If you’re seeking Botox to treat either of these medical conditions, then the additional cosmetic effect will be an added bonus!
Dermal fillers are the newbies on the market in comparison to Botox, but they’ve become extremely popular in recent years due the Kardashian lip trend and the popularly of the perfect pout. However fillers are also used extensively for their age-reversing capabilities. Dermal fillers contain an ingredient called Hyaluronic Acid (HA) which a substance that already naturally occurs in our bodies. The problem is that HA starts to diminish as we get older, leaving us more prone to sagging skin, loss of volume such as under-eye hollows (tear troughs), and wrinkles.
The aesthetic outcome of fillers can be seen immediately after the patient has been treated and they are ideal for anyone who wants to look “freshened up” without looking like they’ve had any work done. Some mild side effects such as swelling and bruising can occur, but these are rare and extra precautions can be taking pre-treatment such as a short course of arnica tablets to prevent bruising. Your treatment will last 12-18 months and the effects will gradually soften towards the end of that period so it will go completely unnoticed by your peers.
Look Refreshed Without Looking Overdone
Whichever option you decide to go for, you can definitely expect to have a lot of positive comments coming your way following your treatment. Most of our patients report having received compliments about how “fresh” they look, with friends and colleagues assuming that they’ve had a facial or a even a vacation.
