Coolsculpting : How it works, Risks and Benefits

There is no magic bullet when it comes to fat removal but coolsculpting is pretty close. Coolsculpting is a non-surgical procedure that permanently freezes fat to contour the body.

Read on to understand how it works, the risks and the benefits. Say goodbye to stubborn fat with just a few appointments at Lipstick Empire here in Edmonton!

How it Works:

CoolSculpting, or cryolipolysis, is a non-surgical body contouring procedure. There is no downtime in the process and it is relatively painless.

Once you have chosen the area that needs treating, the technician will use a Coolsculpting device. This will crystalize and kill off the fat cells under the skin. The fat cells will be gradually broken down and the liver will get rid of them.

CoolSculpting lowers the number of fat cells in the treatment area by between 20 and 25 percent. Unlike other procedures that shrink the fat, coolsculpting destroys the fat cells instead. Once they are gotten rid of, the body will not remake the particular cells.

Note that the remaining fat cells can expand or shrink in accordance with your diet and exercise. It is therefore important to stay healthy and active for overall long-lasting results

Does Coolsculpting Hurt?

Coolsculpting

Most people do not feel anything during the procedure. This is aside from a tugging sensation where the skin is between the device’s cooling panels.

You may experience an intense cold and a feeling of pressure. This does not last for long though. Some patients have had experiences of sleeping during the procedure.

The procedure is however safe because no needles are used and incisions made. It only destroys specific fat cells so no damage is caused to the skin or any other organs.

The risk of side effects and complications often depends on the medical professional performing the procedure. It is important to choose a technician with experience. Book with us today at Lipstick Empire Laser Spa. Our team of technicians will give you an amazing experience!

CoolSculpting is also only proven effective on a limited number of body areas. Body regions where CoolSculpting is  safe and effective for removing minor fat deposits include:

  •        Abdomen and thighs
  •        Under the chin or upper neck
  •        Flanks and under the armpit
  •        The back, buttocks and under the buttocks.

When will the Results Begin to show?

You may see changes in your body in as little as three weeks. It often takes 1 to 4 months for the full results to show. This is because the majority of fat would be out by that time.

Remember to maintain a healthy diet and regime of exercise afterwards.

Who Should Avoid CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is an effective way to reduce the number of fat cells in a small target area. It is not a form of weight loss and treatment of obesity. Book a consultation with our technician at Lipstick Empire to know how good of a candidate you are.

People with weak immune systems are not ideal candidates for the procedure. Conditions that rule out the use of CoolSculpting include:

  •  Pregnancy, attempting to become pregnant, and breastfeeding.
  • Cryoglobulinemia, a disorder where proteins that usually only increase in response to cold are in abnormally high concentrations.
  • Cold agglutinin disease, an autoimmune condition where temperature change kills red blood cells.
  • Paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria, a condition where red blood cells die in response to temperature change.
  • Skin conditions related to the immune system, such as eczema and psoriasis.
  • Inflammatory skin conditions, such as dermatitis and hives.
  • long-term use of blood-thinning medications.
  • Active implants of medical devices, such as pacemakers.
  • Allergy to propylene glycol or isopropyl alcohol.
  • Chronic pain conditions and severe anxiety disorders.

What are the Risks?

CoolSculpting involves freezing fat cells to contour the body. It is a relatively new procedure. Although research is still in progress, it is generally safer than procedures like liposuction.

Most people do not feel anything during the procedure. This is aside from a tugging sensation where the skin is between the device’s two cooling panels.

The only noticeable side effects tend to be minor and occur only around the area of treatment. They usually reduce or go away within a few days to weeks after the procedure.

It is normal, however, to experience numbness or loss of sensation in the treatment area for around a month.

Common immediate side effects of CoolSculpting include:

  •     Redness, firmness and a pinching sensation.
  •     Minor swelling and tenderness in the area.
  •     Muscle cramping and numbness.
  •     Skin sensitivity and bruising

A person may continue to experience these side effects for a few weeks after the procedure. Other common side effects that a person may experience in the first few weeks  include:

  • Itchiness especially a few days after the procedure.
  • Diarrhea as dead cells leaves the body.
  • A feeling of fullness in the throat after treatments involving the neck region.

  • The skin barrier is not broken thus removing any risk of complications such as infection and scarring.
  • There are few reported adverse reactions or outcomes.
  • You do not need to take time off from work or everyday activities afterward.
  • The results look natural, as they develop gradually in the weeks following the surgery.
  • It can help people who have lost weight but still have excess fat in particular areas.
  • There is less risk of regaining weight.
  •  Results are long-lasting because fat cells are actually destroyed and removed from the body.

  • Generally, the procedure can help boost self-confidence. This is most effective when combining it with weight loss through diet and exercise.

Conclusion:

Coolsculpting is basically a low-risk option for removing fat that is proving difficult to remove with diet and exercise.
